The best topsoil to buy for lawns is described as a sandy loam.   This type of soil is "friable", which means that it is easy to work with, it doesn't form into lumps, and it creates a nice flat surface for your new turf. It's also important that the topsoil has been "screened" down to 5mm.   This really means that the soil has been sieved to take out any stones and weed roots that may have been present.
The topsoil we sell at Turfshop is a lovely fertile, screened, sandy loam.   We've chosen it carefully to make your job as easy as possible, and to give you the best possible base for your lawn. Topsoil comes in 1 tonne bags which measure 120cm x 120cm x 120cm (4 ft x 4 ft x 4 ft).
How much topsoil will I need? A depth of at least 150mm of good topsoil is needed for a lawn.    If you already have 150mm of topsoil, and the surface is up to the required level, then you don't need to buy any more.
