Pack contains 250 million nematodes Completely safe to children and pets How to use Apply when the young leatherjackets are active in the soil, this is typically late August through to the end of October. Click here for more information about leatherjackets.
When you start to see the adult daddy-long-legs in your garden (towards the end of August) you will know that in a few days they will be laying eggs. These will hatch quickly, so aim to apply about a week to two weeks after you see the adults. Apply with watering can, hose-end feeder, or sprayer. Apply to moist lawns when the soil temperature is above 12ºC (54ºF). Immediately after applying the nematodes, water the grass well so the nematodes are washed into the soil to reach the roots where the leatherjackets will be. Make sure the lawn does not dry out after applying nematodes. Keep the lawn well watered for at least two weeks. The nematodes (Steinernema feltiae), seek out the leatherjackets and attack the pest by entering natural body openings. Once inside, they release bacteria that stops the pest from feeding, quickly killing the pest. And they don't stop there. The nematodes reproduce inside the dead pest and release a new generation of hungry infective nematodes, which disperse and search for further prey. Once the leatherjackets are all dead, the nematodes also die because their food source has been depleted. The great thing about nematodes is that they are completely safe to humans and animals. One new pesticide on the market today, advertised for use on leatherjackets, contains the active ingredient imidachlorprid which is harmful to bees. Bees have an extremely important role to play in food production and plant growth, and with native species constantly under threat from parasites and other predators, it's important not to make life any harder for the bee. It's a shame that pesticides are promoted which are harmful to insects, when nematodes do an equally good job without causing any environmental damage. Please note As soon as the Leatherjacket Killer arrives in the post, pop it in the fridge until you're ready to use it. Don't worry about putting it next to foodstuffs - it's completely harmless to humans and pets. Free delivery
